We often mention the importance of background music in retail shops as in our article “Achieve Higher Sales in Your Store with Right Music” .

Following is a nice article about the music in grocery stores by Jesse Sendejas JR at Houston Press. Jukeboxy’s Founder and CEO, Orhun Oguzulgen contributed to the article by sharing his knowledge about the type of music choices in retail shops particularly the impact of slow tempo music on grocery shopping behaviors and how stores play music to influence shoppers.

Why Does the Grocery Store Insist on Playing Old Music?

JESSE SENDEJAS JR. | SEPTEMBER 5, 2019 | 4:00AM

If you’re in the grocery store today, listen to the music, as the Doobie Brothers once sang. In fact, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll actually hear the Doobs singing that very song once you tune into the subtle, but important music soundtracking your shopping excursion. In an era where social media watchdogs warn how your data might be used to influence you in all sorts of sneaky ways, practically everyone we asked understands and accepts that music in grocery stores is there to control what and how much you put into your shopping cart.

But what is it about older music that appeals to so many shoppers?

“There are a few reasons but the most important one would be songs from that era bring up the fond memories of ‘the good old days,’” explained Orhun Oguzulgen, founder and CEO of Jukeboxy Music for Business, which provides licensed music to retailers. “When people hear songs that remind them of good memories, they feel more connected with the brand and their shopping behavior changes, in a positive way for the retailer.”

Did you know that plants grow faster when they hear music? In fact, a study by South Korean scientists at National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology suggests that plants can hear because they have the “genes”.

If you have plants in your office or own a flower shop, play some music in your business and watch how fast your plants grow.

Sound and Plant Growth

Research suggests that any sound, including music, helps plant growth. How? Vibrations from the sound waves stimulate growth factors in plants and also warn them from the predators. Remember the days when your mom was talking to the plants and you were wondering what is wrong with her? Apparently, she was perfectly fine. Moms always know better!

Music and Plant Growth

South Korean scientists at National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology played classical music in rice fields and discovered that the crops grew faster.

In another research, a group of plants were exposed to six hours of music and others were in a quiet room. The plants in “music room” grew faster than the “quiet room” plants.

It’s not necessarily the music that makes the plants grow faster. It’s the vibration from the sound waves, all sorts of sound, as mentioned above. However, isn’t it better if they hear music then not so pleasant sounds like cars, people walking around, etc.? Also, why leave them quiet when the nursery is closed? Play some music during off-hours in the nursery and watch how fast the plants grow.

Interesting Fact: Plants like having plant friends around!

It seems like, plants communicate with each other and listen to the vibrations of other plants. They grow healthier and faster when they have plant friends around. Also, research suggests that plants may let other plants know of danger around them like leaf eating insects. When other plants receive the “heads up”, they may stop growing until they deem it is safe to grow again. Isn’t it magnificent?

With his song “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, Lil Nas X has been breaking records since it was released earlier this year. In April, it was announced that the hit song had over 143 million streams in the US alone which broke Drake’s streaming record for his song “In My Feelings”.

Just 2 days ago on July 29th, he officially made Billboard’s chart history, breaking the record of Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” by staying on top of the chart for solid 17 weeks. He also broke the record of 2017’s “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, featuring Justin Bieber which made the top of the chart for 16 weeks.

A day after the news broke, Mariah Carey posted an Instagram post congratulating the young star.

Since the song was released, it has been a discussion in Jukeboxy Music offices whether it was a Rap or a Country song, some suggested it was a Southern hip-hop song. The answer came from the artist himself that he regards the song as a “Country Trap” genre. Country Trap it is!

Jukeboxy was one of the first commercial music streaming service that included the song in its playlists when it came out in December, 2018. Since then it’s one of the top songs that gets the “like” on our Jukeboxy Manager App which includes the liked songs in our customers’ private playlists. Don’t like a song? Jukeboxy Music for Business offers song, artist and genre exclusion as well.

Keep up the good work Lil Nas X and big congratulations!

Numerous research shows that the tempo of music in retail shops has an influence on customer pace and how quickly they move in the store. It also has a big influence on the volume of sales.

Fast or Slow Tempo Music?

Fast or up-tempo music will move your customers quickly. On the other hand, downtempo music means shoppers will move more slowly. If you want your customers to spend more time in the store to look and subsequently, buy, then downtempo music would be recommended. If you own a smaller store and prefer more in and out customers then we recommend fast tempo music in your retail shop.

However, it’s not only the music tempo that retail shops should take into consideration, but it’s also the type of music genres they stream.

Which genres to play in retail shops?

It’s important for business owners to provide the music their customers would like to listen to. The music played should also reflect their brand’s character. If your store attracts younger generation, upbeat popular music would be a good choice. On the other hand, if your customers are older generation, classic Rock or Oldies would be a wise choice. In the USA, every state has their favorite genre or genres. A popular genre for New Yorker’s may not be a favorite one for the Californian’s or because a song is #1 in Billboard doesn’t mean it should play at every store across the country.

Our music curators created a map that shows which genres made the top of the list in each State in 2018.
